Earthquake-shake

Building

What makes a building in California stable enough to survive

severe earthquakes?? How do buildings in NC prepare

themselves in the event that the fault-line in the Western

region should enable an earthquake to happen??

The Earthquake-shake Building project throws students into

the deep end of curriculum, forcing them to engage in an

intense study of the layers of the Earth and understanding how destructive forces can result in change both in the Earth and within structures [NCES, 6.E.2]. Through extensive research, students begin contemplating and understanding ways that buildings can be designed in order to withstand such violent forces as earthquakes.

In the end, students use their scientific observations and understanding to inform their mathematical perspectives, as they use critical algebraic skills to convert one unit of measurement into another [CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2.C] in order to sketch and craft a free-standing scale model.
